German investment company Aequita completed its acquisition of LyondellBasell European olefins and polyolefins assets on May 1, 2026. The acquisition covers four production sites: Berre in France, Münchsmünster in Germany, Carrington in the UK, and Tarragona in Spain, with total capacity of approximately 2.9 million tons. The main products include ethylene, propylene, polyethylene, and polypropylene.
Simultaneously, Aequita acquisition of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) European petrochemical assets is progressing and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. That transaction involves 2.3 million tons of polyolefins capacity and 1.1 million tons of olefins capacity. Once both transactions are completed, Aequita will become the largest polyolefins producer in Europe and the fourth-largest ethylene producer, with a total capacity exceeding 6 million tons and operations spanning the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and the Netherlands.
LyondellBasell divestment of these olefins assets is intended to optimize its asset structure and focus on higher-value specialty chemicals and circular materials.
