Antofagasta profits rise nearly one-third despite sulfuric acid cost surge

Chilean mining company Antofagasta said in August that despite sulfuric acid and diesel price surges raising production costs, its first-half profit rose nearly one-third compared with the same period last year. The gain was supported by high copper prices, which reached nearly $15,000 per metric ton driven by demand from consumer electronics to power grid infrastructure. Mining companies flush with cash from high metal prices are winning the bidding war for scarce sulfur supplies against lower-margin fertilizer producers.
