Arkema Expands Shanghai R&D Center to Support Battery Materials

The Shanghai R&D expansion adds laboratory capacity supporting specialty materials development, including battery materials, according to the chemXplore weekly tracker. The tracker described the work as modernization of the Changshu R&D Center battery materials lab.

Arkema has been building specialty materials positions in batteries, adhesives and lightweighting, areas where it sees higher growth than commodity chemicals exposed to Asian overcapacity.

The expansion comes as specialty chemical makers continue to invest in China despite weak domestic demand and pricing pressure in commodity segments, focusing on higher-value applications tied to electric vehicles and electronics.

The tracker for October 21, 2026 recorded multiple specialty chemical expansions globally, including BASF's Kuanyin semiconductor materials site expansion in Taiwan and Symrise's Globalide musk ingredient capacity expansion in India.
