Asian ethylene rises on supply limits but downstream demand stays weak

Ethylene rose $10/t in Asia on Oct. 16 to $1,160/t CFR Northeast Asia and $1,100/t CFR Southeast Asia as supply tightened and cracker outages loomed, though weak downstream demand capped gains.

Asian ethylene rises on supply limits but downstream demand stays weak

Asian ethylene rose on supply restrictions and concerns over cracker shutdowns, but weak downstream demand and buyer resistance to higher prices limited the increase.

Ethylene was assessed on Oct. 16 at $1,160/t CFR Northeast Asia and $1,100/t CFR Southeast Asia, each up $10/t. FOB Korea rose $20/t to $1,160/t.

European ethylene was assessed at EUR 1,055/t FD northwest Europe.

The pricing picture reflects a market where upstream supply constraints are supporting costs while derivative demand for polyethylene and other products remains sluggish.

Buyers have shown resistance to further increases, keeping the upward momentum modest despite the supply-side support.
