Indian chemical maker Avid Organics plans to build a glycine and glycolic acid plant in the United States by 2028, according to C&EN. The company currently imports both chemicals into the US from its site in India and is negotiating for a plant location.
Avid plans to invest up to $50 million in the US through 2035. Glycolic acid is used in personal care exfoliant and antiwrinkle products, as well as in cleaning and chemical synthesis; glycine is a related amino acid intermediate.
PureTech Scientific is currently the only glycolic acid producer in the US. It bought its plant in Belle, West Virginia from Chemours in 2023.
The project would add domestic US capacity in a niche segment where supply is concentrated in a single producer.
