BioBTX Wins €20.8 Million EU Grant for Circular Aromatics Plant

BioBTX has secured a €20.8 million EU grant for its PETRA circular aromatics plant in Delfzijl, Netherlands, which aims to produce aromatics from waste plastics and biomass. The funding was reported in the chemXplore project tracker for the week of October 21, 2026.

BioBTX Wins €20.8 Million EU Grant for Circular Aromatics Plant

The PETRA project is designed to produce circular aromatics, substituting fossil-based benzene, toluene and xylene-type molecules with material derived from plastic waste and biomass streams, according to the chemXplore weekly project tracker.

The €20.8 million EU grant supports development of the plant in Delfzijl. The tracker for the week of October 21, 2026 also listed Air Liquide supplying Rectisol and Lurgi methanol technology for Perpetual Next's biomethanol project in Delfzijl.

Circular aromatics are of interest to chemical buyers seeking lower-carbon feedstocks for polymers, solvents and specialty intermediates, although commercial scale remains limited relative to fossil-based supply.

The grant follows growing EU support for circular chemical projects under sustainability and industrial transition programs. Output volumes, offtake agreements and commissioning dates for PETRA were not specified in the summary.
