Borealis CEO says small European chemical plants must exit to remain competitive

Borealis CEO Roger Kearns said many European chemical plants operate successfully but are too small to participate in global competition, and some small production sites need to exit the market. He cited Japan and South Korea as references for capacity optimization, where coordinated national industrial policies led to proactive closure of inefficient plants to preserve overall competitiveness. He acknowledged that this model is difficult to replicate directly in the 27-member EU. Borealis is integrating Borealis, Borouge and Nova Chemicals into a polyolefins company with $25 billion in annual revenue.
