Covestro Antwerp PC closure reflects Europeu2019s declining commodity plastics competitiveness

Covestrou2019s plan to close three of four polycarbonate lines and the BPA plant at Antwerp highlights the declining competitiveness of European commodity plastics production. The Antwerp site has nameplate capacity of 240,000 metric tons per year of PC and approximately 245,000 tons per year of BPA. Northwest Europe BPA was assessed around u20ac1,770 per metric ton in mid-October, with PC extrusion grade at u20ac2,000 per ton and general-purpose injection molding grade at u20ac2,300 per ton. Covestro said global PC capacity utilization has fallen sharply and will remain depressed.
