Covestro has commissioned a pilot plant for chemical recycling of Vulkollan, a high-performance polyurethane elastomer. The process recovers purified building blocks at high yield.
Chemical recycling allows complex polymer waste to be converted back into feedstock-quality chemicals, complementing mechanical recycling. Vulkollan is used in demanding applications such as industrial wheels, seals and suspension components.
The pilot plant is part of Covestro's efforts to develop circular economy solutions for polyurethanes, a challenging material class to recycle due to its crosslinked structure.
