A final opinion on classifying trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and its inorganic salts as toxic for reproduction, adopted in June 2026 by ECHA's Committee for Risk Assessment, was published on the ECHA website on October 6.
TFA is an atmospheric degradation product of HFO-1234yf and other F-gases. RAC recommended classifying TFA, sodium trifluoroacetate and other inorganic TFA salts as toxic for reproduction category 1B for adverse effects on development and category 2 for adverse effects on sexual function and fertility.
RAC also recommended classification as persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT) and as very persistent and very mobile (vPvM). The opinions have been forwarded to the European Commission.
If the Commission, after consulting Member States and stakeholders, considers harmonized classification and labelling appropriate, this would result in legally binding harmonized classifications for TFA, NaTFA and other inorganic TFA salts.
The classifications would carry various requirements under the CLP Regulation covering classification, labelling and packaging.
