The European Commission has selected 77 industrial projects across 23 countries in the European Economic Area for potential funding totalling €3.4 billion under the Innovation Fund, financed by revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System.
The selected initiatives include projects involving chemical recycling of plastics, biopolymer production and development of alternatives to fossil-based resins.
In chemical recycling, the Circus project proposed by Greenertis Tarragona in Spain aims to convert mixed plastic waste, predominantly polyolefins, into pyrolysis oil for use in steam crackers. In the Netherlands, PTC Amsterdam has proposed the Plastic project, combining slow-cracking pyrolysis with in-line decontamination systems.
In Hamburg, Traceless Materials plans to build an industrial production facility under the Beyond project, using agricultural residues to produce natural materials with thermoplastic-like properties. In Finland, NG Nordic Finland has proposed the Eagle pilot project, which aims to capture about 10,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from waste-to-energy flue gases for PHA production with renewable hydrogen.
Among the Italian projects selected is Eni's Ravenna CCS Phase 2, designed for a capacity of up to 4 million tonnes per year of CO2 transport and storage. Selection does not yet constitute final confirmation of grants, and the outcome of grant agreement preparation is expected in the first quarter of 2027.
