The plant represents a total investment of 60 billion rupees and uses Lummus Technology process licensing, integrated with Haldia Petrochemicals' existing petrochemical complex. Feedstocks are propylene and benzene.
The facility is described as India's largest phenol and acetone production site and the first phenol plant on the country's east coast. It is expected to reduce India's import dependence for phenol and acetone.
Phenol is used in polycarbonate, epoxy resins, phenolic resins and caprolactam, while acetone feeds solvents, MMA and bisphenol-A production. Domestic supply additions could alter Indian import flows for these intermediates.
The commissioning is expected to support downstream manufacturing, attract investment to the region and create jobs.
