INEOS has opened the European Union's first full-scale permanent CO2 storage facility at Greensand in the Danish North Sea. The facility has initial capacity of 0.4 million tons per year with potential for expansion.
Greensand is a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project that stores CO2 in depleted offshore oil and gas reservoirs. The project is part of a broader European effort to develop CCS infrastructure as a tool for decarbonizing hard-to-abate industrial sectors.
The opening marks a milestone in commercial-scale CO2 storage in Europe, where several other CCS projects are under development in the North Sea region.
