INEOS Inovyn moved to acquire the UK's only ethylene dichloride (EDC) production asset at Runcorn, according to a weekly industry roundup. EDC is a key intermediate in the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
The acquisition would consolidate INEOS Inovyn's position in the UK vinyls chain at a time when European chlor-alkali and PVC producers face high energy costs and competitive pressure from lower-cost regions. The Runcorn site has been a central part of the UK's chemical industry for decades.
