JFE Engineering and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical announced Oct. 20 that they signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly study establishing an environmentally circular methanol production technology using waste gasification.
JFE Engineering holds the C-PhoeniX Process, described as a rare waste gasification technology that can process a wide range of waste including municipal solid waste to generate hydrogen and carbon monoxide, with more than 20 years of operating experience.
Mitsubishi Gas Chemical operates an integrated methanol business spanning resource development, methanol production, logistics, derivatives development and sales. Under the memorandum, the two will establish technology to produce methanol from synthesis gas generated from waste, for use in plastics, synthetic fibers and fuels.
The work is positioned as part of Mitsubishi Gas Chemical's Carbopath environmental circular platform and will be linked to a NEDO Green Innovation Fund project on carbon neutrality in the waste and resource circulation field.
The two companies plan to accelerate studies toward a large-scale demonstration test, with completion targeted for fiscal 2030.
