The European acetone and phenol market has reacted mixedly to news that Germany's Leuna Polyamid could halt production by the end of September if it fails to secure an investor. Some distributors reported increased inquiries from the Leuna area, viewing it as an opportunity, while others suggested limited impact given Leuna's already reduced operating rates.
According to market sources, Leuna had been mostly captive on phenol, so spot market availability would not be heavily impacted. However, the announcement added pressure to an already tight acetone and phenol market due to an ongoing force majeure at the INEOS Gladbeck plant and a turnaround at Borealis.
The development also raised questions about regional propylene balances, with the closure potentially releasing additional refinery-grade and polymer-grade propylene volumes into the market, though most sources cautioned against overstating the impact.
