LKAB is constructing a new sorting plant at Malmberget in Sweden to handle apatite-rich tailings, according to a weekly industry roundup. The project is under construction.
The sorting plant is part of efforts to recover apatite, a source of phosphate, from mining residues. Phosphate is a critical raw material for fertilizers and industrial chemicals, and Europe has limited domestic supply. Recovery from tailings improves resource efficiency and reduces waste.
