Mitsubishi Gas Chemical starts CO2-based methanol demonstration plant

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical started a methanol demonstration plant using industrial gases and CO2 at its Mizushima site, according to the chemXplore Weekly issue of Oct. 28, 2026, which tracked the project as "MGC Mizushima Carbopath Methanol Demonstration Plant."

The demonstration plant is designed to produce methanol from captured CO2 and industrial gas streams, part of industry efforts to reduce reliance on fossil-based syngas for methanol production.

The milestone was listed under basic chemicals in the weekly roundup, alongside KBR's ammonia revamp wins and Linde's expanded industrial gas supply to Tata Steel at Kalinganagar.

The demonstration phase is intended to validate the process before any potential commercial-scale deployment.
