Nutrien said on October 5, 2026, that after reviewing strategic alternatives it decided to indefinitely close its nitrogen fertilizer production site at Point Lisas, Trinidad. The company said persistent local natural gas supply constraints and high uncertainty made closure the best option to improve free cash flow and return on investment.
Nutrien owns four anhydrous ammonia plants and one urea plant in Trinidad and Tobago's Point Lisas industrial zone, one of the world's largest nitrogen complexes. It produces about 85,000 tonnes of ammonia and 55,000 tonnes of urea per month.
On October 23, 2025, Nutrien implemented a controlled shutdown of the facility due to local port access restrictions and insufficient economically reliable natural gas supply.
Nutrien said the closure will not affect its 2026 nitrogen sales guidance, since the Trinidad facility had already been assumed not to produce. The company previously forecast 2026 nitrogen sales of 9.2 to 9.7 million tonnes.
