South Korea Petrochemical Restructuring Targets 1.39 Million t/y Ethylene Exit as Oversupply Bites

South Korea's petrochemical industry began executing capacity reductions after years of discussion, with YNCC's shutdown of its No. 2 and No. 3 naphtha crackers representing approximately 1.39 million tonnes per year of ethylene capacity exiting the market. The units were placed into long-term shutdown from August 31, 2026, for at least three years.

The restructuring reflects structural oversupply in Northeast Asian petrochemical markets, where new large-scale capacity in China has displaced South Korean exports and compressed margins. The exit of high-cost marginal capacity was viewed as necessary for the industry's long-term competitiveness, but the pace and coordination of closures remained uncertain.
