Syngenta announced on Oct. 1, 2026, its intention to stop all operations at its Grangemouth manufacturing center in Scotland and begin formal consultations with unions and employee representatives. Grangemouth has four active ingredient production units, three for azoxystrobin and one for pinoxaden, plus formulation, filling and packaging facilities supplying finished products to global markets.
Syngenta said it had conducted a detailed assessment of Grangemouth operations as part of its global supply chain strategy. It cited intensifying international competition, energy challenges and high site operating costs as the main reasons for the proposal, saying that despite continued cost-reduction measures, the site remains significantly more expensive to operate than its other production locations.
The proposed timetable would see Grangemouth operations cease by the end of 2027, affecting 377 employees. The proposal remains subject to consultation, during which the company will discuss the future of the plant and possible alternatives with relevant parties.
The proposal adds to a series of European chemical and crop protection site rationalizations announced in 2026 as producers confront high energy costs and import competition.
