Tsubame BHB, a start-up spun out of the Institute of Science Tokyo, plans to build a high-purity ammonia plant in western India with an annual production capacity of 2,000 metric tons, according to C&EN.
High-purity ammonia is used in the production of solar cells, and the planned plant would have enough capacity to support 20 GW per year of solar cell output.
The company uses lower-temperature, lower-pressure ammonia synthesis technology, which it says enables smaller-scale, more distributed production than conventional Haber-Bosch plants.
The project targets the photovoltaic manufacturing supply chain, where demand for electronic-grade ammonia is growing alongside module capacity expansion in India.
