UPM officially opened its Leuna biorefinery in Germany on Oct. 15, 2026, according to reports. The plant is still ramping up, with only enzymatic hydrolysis and the lignin-based specialty chemicals having reached stable operation so far.
The facility is designed to produce biochemicals from wood, targeting fossil-free chemicals markets. UPM described the Leuna facility as designed to tackle a central challenge facing the chemicals industry.
The biorefinery was featured as the project of the week in the chemXplore Weekly issue of Oct. 28, 2026, which listed it under commissioning and start-up status.
Lignin-based specialty chemicals are among the higher-value outputs intended to improve the economics of wood-based chemical production.
