Egypt signs MoU for Mediterranean green hydrogen hub integrated with ammonia plants

Green Hydrogen Development Holding Limited, a subsidiary of United Energy Group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemicals Company, Alexandria Fertilizers Company (Alexfert) and Orascom Construction to explore a Mediterranean Green Hydrogen Hub in Alexandria. The signing took place on the sidelines of the Egypt Energy Show 2026, as reported on 10 October.

Under the MoU, UEG and Orascom Construction will lead feasibility studies for 500 MW of renewable energy generation (wind and solar) and green hydrogen production capacity equivalent to 480 tonnes per day of green ammonia. The project aims to integrate green hydrogen into existing ammonia infrastructure.

Abu Qir and Alexfert will evaluate integration of green hydrogen into ammonia production processes while supporting access to local resources and infrastructure. The partners said the project aligns with Egypt's ambitions to become a hub for green fuels, including renewable fuels of non-biological origin.

Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is developing investment incentive packages to increase the country's global green hydrogen market share to 8%, targeting annual production of 10 million tonnes, according to Minister Karim Badawi.

"Egypt offers a strategic gateway for green energy investments," said Kamel Elsawi, Regional President of UEG Africa. UEG is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
