An international consortium comprising OQ's alternative energy business unit, Marubeni Corporation, Linde and Dutco signed a Joint Development Agreement to develop a green hydrogen and green ammonia project at Salalah Free Zone in Oman. The agreement was announced on 13 October.

The project, named SalalaH2, targets production of up to 1,000 tonnes per day of green ammonia, utilizing OQ's existing ammonia plant in Salalah. An electrolysis facility with capacity of up to 400 MW will be built to produce green hydrogen.

Approximately 1 GW of solar and wind energy, from existing or new facilities, will power the electrolyzer. The consortium is conducting studies that will provide the basis for an investment decision.

Offtake streams being explored include co-firing needs of coal-fired power plants in Asia, renewable feedstock needs of fertilizer plants in Europe and decarbonisation needs of the global shipping industry.

"The integration of the Salalah cluster between LPG, methanol and ammonia is already bringing great synergies," said Dr. Salim Al Huthaili, CEO of Alternative Energy at OQ. Linde's Philippe Peccard said hydrogen and its derivatives will play a key role in reshaping the global energy landscape.
