Rain Carbon and BioBTX partner to supply renewable aromatics from plastic waste

Rain Carbon Inc., an affiliate of India's Rain Industries, announced a collaboration with Netherlands-based BioBTX to deliver renewable aromatic products to the chemical industry, Chemical Week reported on Oct. 5.

The partnership follows BioBTX's final investment decision in July 2026 to build its first commercial-scale facility in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. Using BioBTX's proprietary integrated catalytic cracking process (ICCP), the plant will be the world's first dedicated greenfield facility designed to convert plastic waste into approximately 10,000 metric tons/year of renewable aromatic oil, expected to start in early 2028.

Under the collaboration, Rain Carbon will process BioBTX's circular aromatic oil into benzene, phthalic anhydride and other aromatic derivatives. The companies said these products will meet the same quality and performance standards as conventional fossil-based chemicals.

BioBTX has demonstrated ICCP at a pilot plant in Groningen. Rain Carbon is a vertically integrated supplier of carbon-based and chemical products that converts industrial by-products from oil refining, steel production, and bio-based and recycling sources.
