Sasol Restarts Idled Paraffin Unit in Augusta, Lifts Force Majeure

Sasol restarted an idled normal paraffin production unit in Augusta, Italy, and lifted supply restrictions on LAB, LAS and related cleaning-product chemicals imposed in April. The company said the restart improves supply reliability for detergent and personal care customers.

Sasol Restarts Idled Paraffin Unit in Augusta, Lifts Force Majeure

Sasol International Chemicals has restarted a production unit in Augusta, Italy, that had been idle, and says it will resume normal supply of several chemicals used in cleaning products. The unit makes normal paraffin, a raw material for linear alkylbenzene and linear alkyl sulfonate, which are used in household cleaners and laundry detergents.

In April, Sasol declared force majeure on LAB, LAS and related products, citing geopolitical tensions affecting its sites in Italy and Germany. With the Augusta unit running again, Sasol said supply is more reliable and is lifting the restriction.

"This restart reinforces the strategic value of our regional manufacturing footprint and enhances our ability to support customers in key markets," said Antje Gerber, executive vice president of Sasol International Chemicals. Omar Espinosa, senior vice president of commercial, said the extra normal paraffin capacity strengthens supply continuity across the asset base.

Sasol said the additional capacity also increases its ability to make chemicals for cleaning and personal care products. The announcement was published on Oct. 30.
